You’ve seen it everywhere: “AI is taking over jobs,” “AI is disrupting industries,” even the AI overview is now the first thing that comes up in a Google search most often. It seems that AI is the hottest topic of conversation these days, especially in education, and has affected everything, causing concern across the board about its potential for replacing human thought and labor.
However, in a fast paced world where there is never enough time to accomplish too many important things, AI’s role in education can be used to help free up the time spent on monotonous tasks, like data input and initial curriculum planning for teachers. That way, they can focus their energy on giving students the best education.
There is a way to work together with AI, and seeing how artificial intelligence is changing education by making it more personalized, attentive, and accessible is a good place to explore the potentials of AI in this important field.
With cuts in funding, teacher burnout, and a greater focus on standardized test results, in many schools and classrooms there is not enough time to cover all the learning material, resulting in rushed and generalized lessons that the majority of students can’t absorb.
There is more research about how neurodiversity affects students’ learning capabilities, showing that the one size fits all approach no longer works. The future of AI in education is that it can help personalize material to each student’s learning needs. For example, a student who needs the reinforcement of seeing text while listening to a lecture in order to fully understand, can have the AI transcript of the teacher’s speech running in front of them. This student is learning with AI to help their specific needs, while sitting in the same classroom as the rest of the students. No one gets left behind, and the teacher can actually teach and get through to everyone.
AI’s role in education can also be to analyze student learning behaviors and data, showing teachers who is mastering which topics and where more attention should be paid. For more advanced students, AI can quickly develop more challenging versions of the base curriculum to give them the boost they need, as well as keep them from getting bored or acting out.
NARA Education’s virtual schools have built in AI in our software so that the learning experience is completely personalized to the child, giving them an enjoyable experience and an authentic education.
AI’s influence in education will finally allow teachers to be more attentive to their students and ensure that their education and well-being is the priority, instead of dull administrative tasks. Most teachers love teaching, but hate the paperwork, and AI’s role in education can be to alleviate it.
AI can automate inputting grades, categorizing student data, and filing paperwork for school related admin, which are often monotonous and time consuming for teachers, taking their time away from the students who are the reason they are there in the first place. AI can even do basic grading, so that teachers just need to review the grades and add their own comments.
Stronger curriculums can also be created with AI by having AI develop a base curriculum that a teacher can review and perfect. Not only does this slash time and effort, but it can also build a better curriculum because the teacher perfected it with peak brain power and did not exert a ton of energy to write it from scratch.
Artificial intelligence is changing education for the better because all of these timing saving techniques allow teachers to have more uninterrupted, genuine one on one time with their students which is the true marker of a great education.
Online courses, distance learning, and hybrid programs in secondary and higher education have exploded on the scene the past few years and have only gotten more robust. These opportunities expand access to education to millions more people than before by making it more affordable and accessible from anywhere.
Distance learning with AI can make these online courses personalized and tailored to each individual student (just like the earlier examples). This is even more impactful in an online course because the teacher is even further removed from the students they are responsible for, who could be much more in number, compared to a physical classroom, and scattered across the globe.
Another of AI’s role in education is one of a tutor to supplement an online course. According to the World Economic Forum, students who receive separate individual tutoring do academically better than 98% of those who don’t. This astounding statistic shows that an important aspect of the future of AI in education is to expand personal tutoring access to students in order to boost everyone’s academic performance and break down barriers in education.
At NARA Education, we fully welcome the growth of AI’s influence in education in both our physical and virtual schools. So many students want to attend our schools, but since we do not have enough teachers to give the full attention needed to each child, we use AI to smooth out admin processes so that they can be fully present in the classroom.
Our main mission is to make education easily accessible to all children in poverty across Pakistan (and the world), and we are doing that through our virtual schools which embrace AI. Our virtual schools work individually with each student and use AI to adapt to their learning needs and time constraints. Since our goal is to have children “attend” our virtual school alongside their family obligations and in spite of poverty, AI’s role in education is to create a flexible, effective, and fun learning environment tailored to each child.
Artificial intelligence is changing education rapidly and for the better because it is letting quality education return to the forefront of schooling and expanding it all over the world. AI’s role in education includes personalized learning, more attentive teachers, and more robust online and distance learning, which we fully embrace at NARA Education. We are excited to evolve and improve our educational technologies, and seeing the future of AI in education.
